Latest News
Published research studies have found that kids are twice as sensitive to tobacco advertising than adults and are more likely to be influenced to smoke by cigarette marketing than by peer pressure, and that one-third of underage experimentation with smoking is attributable to tobacco company advertising.

Tobacco Prevention
WHAT WE'RE ABOUT
The Tobacco prevention program is limited to two counties Platte and Colfax. The prevention program used community coalitions to promote tobacco prevention activities. The ECDHD coalitions would like to see as many smoke free restaurants and businesses in our area as possible. On a regular basis businesses are recognized for going smoke-free or opening smoke-free with a plaque from the Health Department and the business name and picture in the newspaper. The coalitions work with schools, hospitals, the chamber of commerce, police departments, and agencies and private individuals to promote smoke-free establishments, in compliance with the Nebraska Clean Air Act. The Tobacco Coalitions were formed in 2001, and funding is provided to ECDHD by the Health and Human Services System/Tobacco Free Nebraska, as a result of the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement.

The tobacco industry spends more than $12.4 billion per year - over $34.1
million a day - marketing its deadly products in the U.S. alone, much of
this reaching kids. At this rate, the companies have spent
$29,521,972,705
so
far this year. |

Smoking
kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and
suicides combined -- and thousands more die from other tobacco-related causes --
such as fires caused by smoking (more than 1,000 deaths/year nationwide) and
smokeless tobacco use. No good estimates are currently available, however, for
the number of Nebraska citizens who die from these other tobacco-related causes,
or for the much larger numbers who suffer from tobacco-related health problems
each year without actually dying.
